2016
After the earthquake and after careful observation in the poor district outside of Bhaktapur, Tara and Binod have engaged in many projects. Projects in their minds is to help the most vulnerable. One of them is the Gyan Bikash school, which we chose to support as well.
What Tara and Binod felt the most important, is that these kids get one real meal per day. If they were able to serve school lunch, the children would not only get energy for studies, free food would motivate the children to attend school and also the parents be motivated to send them there. Without this motivation there's a big risk that the parents, due to lack of money, need to send the children to work on the fields, brick construction or services in richer homes.
With the help of contributions from friends and what they themselves could refrain, Tara and Binod manage to have lunch for these 38 children every day. The effect was not only that these children were given food, the rumor spread rapidly in the poor districts, that free food was served at this school and quickly increased the number of children. At Maines visit in November 2016, the number of students were 75.
To provide more long-term help, In December 2016 we assumed the responsibility to provide lunch meals at Gyan Bikash School in memory of Jan. In September 2017, the number of students were 122, and in December 2017 it had increased to 140.
Because we could help with this food project, Tara and Binod can now help in more places where help is needed, and there are many.
We hope to expand our project and help both Gyan Bikash School and also Suberneshower at Katunje where there is currently 60 students in need for food. The goal is to also support them with one lunch meal per day
UPDATE FEBRUARY 2020
Thanks to the collaboration with the Lions Club, we can now continue the food project at Gyan Bikash School, currently 175 students. Unfortunately, we had to drop the support there for a few months and completely Suberneshows at Katunje because we had no contact in place that could help with the practical and immediately we lost about 10 children at Gyan Bikash who chose not to come to school. Of course, we hope we get them back now.

UPDATE FEBRUARY 2021 As previously announced, thanks to the collaboration with the Lions Club in Bhaktapur, the project has been able to continue. Unfortunately, Covid-19 put a stop to most of 2020.
The school was closed between April 2020 and January 2021.
Now it has been able to open up again. To begin with, there were very few children who came back but the numbers have risen week by week and are now up to about 100. We hope the lunch service will make it continue to rise.
I have not received any report of Covid-19 taking any lives among the children. Our concern has been great for the children when the country has been in the look down for several months. Have the parents lost the little income they had? Has there been any food at all in the homes? If they have not been able to eat before, there is a great fear that some have not survived this crisis.
